even candles remind me of you…

29Mar07

sometimes even loadshedding can be inspiring. i was watching a bug flitting around the candle on my table tonight as i sipped a cold glass of ice water. on somebody’s insistence, i am trying to reduce my daily cold drink intake. anyways i came up with this short nazm which i wanted to read to fudge but obviously she was asleep and even if she had been awake i’d probably have chickened out rather than face her criticism.

parwanay ki faryad

ai raaton ke khuda, is shab ko zara tool to day
meray jalne say qabal sehar na aa jaye kahin
jis ki gardish mein loh-e-zeest gul ho jani hai
meray marnay se qabal shama bujh na jaye kahin

apney chaand se keh day orh lay baadal ki rida
us kay jalway say meray yaar ki hatak hoti hai
jaise kamzarf ke hathon mein saghar dainay say
maikaday ki, har maikhwaar ki hatak hoti hai

ye shum-e-firozaan hai ya paara-e-mehar?
husn-e-kaamil hai ke kya hai mujhe maaloom nahin
mujhe ye mil gaya, kaisee ye qismat thi meri?
ye mehar hai ke qehar hai mujhe maaloom nahin

tuu to jaanta hoga maira fardaa kya hai
mein parwaana hoon jal jaoonga mar jaoonga
mein khaar sahi, mera ishq to falak paima hai
jal kar hi sahi, rakh ban ker to yaad aaoonga

mairay har muzmahil khwaab ki taabeer hai yeh
is ke milnay se qabal sehar na aa jaye kahin
ai raaton ke khuda, is shab ko zara tool to day
meray jalne say qabal sehar na aa jaye kahin

for the record i’m adopting the pseudonym “khumar”. my cousins insist that using my own name makes for marsiya type reading when i’m more in the genre of the stuff you see on water tankers. plus its too identifying. so i’m khumar karachvi now.

    Aha! AHA!

Like Bhaijan, I like the first sher. And the last. Wait, they are the same. But that’s what made me exclaim ‘aha’.

Nice poem, indeed. You just never know where the inspiration might come from 🙂 (Apart from you-know-who, that is.)
