nida’s piece of art (one of them actually)

i remember posting a piece on my blog about a painting an artist friend made some time back. two weeks ago i saw the thing in dawn’s weekly art section, gallery, and i thought “damn, what a ripoff” before i noticed who it had been credited to.

for something about the veneration a desi woman accords her man, this is one of those paintings which need no explanation for even the least imaginative of you.Β  you art connossieurs out there better watch out, Β for nida aqeel is destined to beΒ the next big thing.

Sooo true. This is a beautiful painting. And you just made me miss the jerk! 😦

  2. 2 skzworldofdreams

I’ve been there…gosh AM still there! AAHH!! 😦

  3. bibi, i’m highlighting the problem. try and be the solution instead of compounding it. why do women think they’re so weak anyway?

  4. 4 skzworldofdreams

I know that’s the problem. And it’s not about women being weak, Abbas. If I was weak my ex would still love me and be with me. It’s just..I don’t know..when we love someone alot, this is how far we can go (the painting); we shouldn’t. I don’t think women should stay in that position, venerate him no matter what. We need to respect ourselves, coz otherwise your kids grow up seeing yu and follwoing your lack of respect for yourself. But the instinct is to do that, unless the man just overdoes it with the ‘jerkness’ stuff. That’s just how much we can love our man. And instead of men respecting that and taking care of it, they (o.k. maybe not all) abuse that love.

  5. 5 skzworldofdreams

And being strong can also be very lonely at times. 😦 But being strong is the only way to go, huh?

  6. yes. it is definitely the only way. for better or for worse.

  7. 7 skzworldofdreams

  8. ok wait… i dont get it… what’s the painting try to say? yeah i see teh washed shirt, but what’s wtih the glass of water? gosh, im stopid….

anyways, xille, women, especially in our society, are BROUGHT UP being told they are weak… and that they need a male figure to protect them, in the form of father, brother, husband or son… damn it, i cant even go for an umrah because i dont have a mehram… which i dont.

i was brought up differently and can change my own flat tyre (have done so in the past). therefore, guys are “intimidated” by me… BAH~!!! im not about to get married until i can pretend to be a damsel in distress for a guy to fulfill his role of knight in shining armour so he can feel macho or something… the whole thing is so disgusting…
SK’s right. strong women make guys feel insecure…

    but what’s with the glass?

  9. and you actually managed to graduate from nca… πŸ˜›

dummy, she’s collecting the water that’s dripping from the shirt; not letting it fall to the floor; izzat and ahteram and veneration and respect and worship and all. get it?

  10. πŸ˜€ i graduated with honours.
actually… no comment on why i wasnt able to see that πŸ™‚

  11. 11 Extiinct

More than izzat and ehtram I think it portraits the length a woman is willing to go for her man regardless of how he treats her. It’s not weakness. It’s strength. The ability to love WITHOUT expecting something back in return. That’s true strength. more of character than love. It’s also shitty. not saying it’s not, especially since men take it for granted and don’t even bother with a mere thankyou most of the time favouring a frown instead because the wife doesn’t fit with his set of peers etc etc.

But imagine the lengths a woman will go if appreciated.

  12. @ pachyderm: blah blah blah…. πŸ˜›
@ samar: there is always that aspect. i wonder why i’m coming off as a feminist here… πŸ™‚

  13. Take it as a sign to watch chick flicks uve been talking about on my blog πŸ˜›

  14. 14 SK

    Yaar, hemlock…you seriously didn’t get it?!! O_O
No, hemlock, Xil. Know what the glass is for? She’s collecting the drops from the shirt, and when she’s done, there will ony be like maybe 10 drops of water in the glass. And then she’ll go to her ‘man’ and say “THIS is ALL you’re worth!!” πŸ˜€

  15. @ samar: err… no thanks πŸ™‚

@ bibi: gives a whole new meaning to that catchy bollywood dance number, sajna jee vari vari jaoon mein, tu hee to mera sansaar hai… doesn’t it?

  16. 16 SK

    πŸ˜€ ABSOLUTELY!! πŸ˜€

  17. 17 SK

And the dud guy won’t even get the iron of it all! πŸ˜› πŸ˜€

  18. 18 SK

Err…’irony’ of it all…though for most guys (who won’t get it anyway) it doesn’t really matter HOW you put it! πŸ˜›

  19. Uh… is there is link to the painting which I cant seem to find? Considering everyone seems to have seen it. πŸ™‚

  20. 20 Saadat

    Oh. My. God.

I mean, forget the hidden message and the veneration and the glass for a second. This is such a gorgeous piece of painting. Such detail, such maturity. Nida Aqeel has a fan.

Though my first thoughts were that that’s a little girl in the painting. Weird, huh? And does any of you remember that Mir Dard’s shair: “Tar-damani pay shaikh, hamari na jaiyo… daman nichorr dein tau farishtay wuzu karein”. Maybe that is a little girl who is, in fact, an angel, and waiting to fill her glass up to perform wuzu? Perhaps that shirt is Mir Dard’s too?

    Okay, I’ll shut up now.

By the way, the Moon and Venus are making an interesting noon (the Urdu letter – Ω†) outside. Just thought I’d mention that too.

  21. @ bibi: trust you to make a “guys are dumb” post out of anything. πŸ˜›

@ saira: uh… like put your glasses on πŸ™‚ maybe its not loading properly in toronto, the pic is right there as a part of the post.

@ saadat: most of my readers are not mir dard fans – sabir zafar is more their type πŸ™‚ and the moon and venus seem to look more like a pakistani flag from where i’m looking at ’em.

  22. by the way, mir dard probably wore sherwanis πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  23. actually if you ask me, it looks like the girl is a typical thirsty karachi resident who is collecting water since the government isnt providing it

  24. 24 SK

Saadat: ‘Maybe that is a little girl who is, in fact, an angel, and waiting to fill her glass up to perform wuzu?’err…that is sooo not a little girl. πŸ™‚ And ‘waiting to fill her glass from water from someone’s shirt…let alone a MAN’S shirt?!! Usse Na paak hona hai? I mean isn’t wuzu all about becoming paak?! Totally kills the concept! πŸ˜› πŸ™‚ . Sorry Xil, just had to point THAT out. πŸ˜€
Xil: ‘trust you to make a β€œguys are dumb” post out of anything’…hehehe…I know. Pathetic nah? I hate doing that, you know (though you couldn’t tell!) 😦 . Would much rather be in a position where I can go on and on about ‘how wonderful guys are, and how decent and wow my ‘hubby is’ BUT that just ain’t happenin’! Even ex didn’t give me a chance to do that! He just proved my..err…theory?! It’s the men’s fault I do that you know! πŸ˜› πŸ˜€

  25. 25 SK

Hemlock: O_O !!! You just killed the painting you know! :S
‘Innallilahe wa inna alayhi raajeoon!’ 😦

  26. She painted this when she was getting over her own broken engagement. There is more to this series, but art is subjective, like all other important things. You don’t know what could click, but she is really good:)

  27. 27 SK

Oh my god! Didn’t know that. That just makes this painting that much more expressive and beautiful. Sorry to hear about the broken engagement. 😦

  28. 28 PsycheD

    baazoo nai thakkey kya??????????

am not art smart, and am not ashamed to admit it…i’d go with samar’s interpretation…and hemlock’s too…it’s not fair that I also cannot go for pilgrimage just like that on my own 😦

and yes…we have been taught by our society that women are the weaker sex..and those who dared to be ‘strong’ women end up intimidating guys…no debate on that one! loserz!

am impressed at hemlock changing a flat tyre. i tried to learn once…but dad thought it was not necessary – wasiey bhi pak mein if a girl does somehtng like that in the middle of the road….just imagine who gets a field day?

  29. 29 SK

    Loserz indeed!!! Hmph!!! 😦

  30. 30 Nida Aqeel

  31. 31 skzworldofdreams

Hey! Nida Aqeel’s here (Tauba! do I sound like a desi fan running after a celebrity! πŸ˜› ) ANYWAYYYSS…just wanted to say…wonderful painting. Very beautiful. Totally me. Though that’s the sad part. 😦 BUT looking forward to seeing more of your work. Hope you’re fine now (the engagement thingy).
Oh and where did ‘icy’ go again? Panting ke piche chhup gaya? πŸ˜€

  32. SK darling, i am hemlock. i poison to kill

  33. as for icy… i think he got diluted in the glass of water … πŸ˜€ pani thanda kerne ke lie πŸ˜€
jehan waves triplet nahi, woh ghar ghar nai… waves… nam hi kaafi hai.

i love your line though ” very beautiful… totally me ”
    right SK :p
PsycheD: all men can go to hell. bus. keh dia hum ne

  34. 34 SK

lol!! I didn’t mean ‘totally beautiful like me!!! C’mon!! That’s so not me talking…more like my ex! πŸ˜› I meant the painting is beautiful and depicts what I feel like, what I was with him!! Tauba! To explain a whole painting!! πŸ˜› πŸ˜€
lol at ‘icy’ thingy. πŸ™‚ Talk about jumping into the glass JUST coz a girl is holding it…anything to get close! πŸ˜€ Men! πŸ˜›

  35. 35 SK

Ya phir he is using this echnique again to have his comments reach up to a 100…AGAIN!…so he can ‘show off’. πŸ˜€

  36. 36 SK

  37. It’s really nice seeing modern desi art that actually speaks something about the culture, as opposed to something that’s so abstract that I don’t even get it or understand it.

Just like Hemlock [maybe we are from the same planet, where no one else is from?] I interpreted differently.

Is she really catching water from the shirt?
    Where are like… droplets?
Didn’t she like, miss some of the droplets, certainly she can’t get them all?

I *think* by the shrit hanging to dry, the woman then is preparing for like the guy to snatch it up, and she’s on her knees offering water, a sign of .. err many things?

I don’t know where I was going with this. But I saw it as a woman’s preparedness, though weak she’s ‘always on her toes.’ thinking not about her, but others.

  38. 38 Saadat

err…that is sooo not a little girl. πŸ™‚ And β€˜waiting to fill her glass from water from someone’s shirt…let alone a MAN’S shirt?!! Usse Na paak hona hai? I mean isn’t wuzu all about becoming paak?! Totally kills the concept! πŸ˜› πŸ™‚

SK, okay, she might not be a little girl, but you just totally killed the concept in Mir Dard’s shair!

Never mind. I am not a Mir Dard fan, anyway — that shair was included in our FSc’s Urdu syllabus.

  39. 39 SK

Saadat: Well I have never heard Mir Dard, so I wouldn’t know, but if he’s saying stuff like “women becoming paak with men’s dhuli hui shirt, I certainly don’t want to read HIS ash’aar!! πŸ˜› πŸ˜€
Monologist…err…no. πŸ˜€ C’mon bhai! Totally killing such a beautiful painting! 😦 You are so talking like my auditor sister. πŸ™‚

  40. 40 Nida Aqeel

  43. 43 Nida Aqeel

“there’s an empty frame….(my life after marriage…ive yet to figure out wat its gonna be like…therefore its empty)…..the frame has a golden outline…(its gold…m hoping for it to be a gud one…HOPE!!!)
the background is chaotic..tea and coffee staining..which show’s from underneath the frame.(talks about my past experiences…which is now buried but will always stay wid me..( things that haf happened and i cant change)

*ive described one of my work*

  44. 44 SK

err…I’d ask Abbas, but as you can see we have to occassionally (very occassionally nowadays!) look for him, as he has this habit of disappearing on his fellow bloggers. Will do when he comes back though. πŸ™‚
πŸ™‚ Your nani is soo right. Ironically my dad has always said something similar to us all our lives. He is just an awesome person πŸ™‚ Guess I thought ALL men knew that about the male gender! πŸ˜›
Inshallah the person whom U are now marrying will turn out to be great…Inshallah…will pray for you. πŸ™‚
I thought so…that U were describing one of your art pieces…and it sounds beautiful again…can just imagine it. Though would love to see it. πŸ˜€ I would def. buy your paintings if I was in Pak. πŸ™‚ As i said b4, they’re just so me.

  45. I love this painting! Does Nida have a website? Its wonderful.

  46. Your friend sounds agonizingly familiar..

In any case, the painting is superb, and I agree with everyone else.

  47. 47 PsycheD

omg!! the painter herself is here! AND omg! she also went thru a heartbreak!!!
:S yeah sk…its a desi thing i gues…going all gaga over a celebrity lol! hey nida!! interested in being featured in my mag? πŸ™‚ cant wait to see the what materializes out of the empty frame….i wish u all the ‘gold’ in ur interpretation on life after shaadi.

  48. 48 suga

If I was the girl sittin underneath that shirt – Id have a lighter in my hand instead of that glass…

Set the blasted shirt on fire.

cool paintin…although it also sends across a message to men that girls will do anythin for them – hold a glass underneath their clothes – no matter how much shit they throw at us…its showin both a strong side..and a weak side of a women..

    Thats my opinion…

    Best of luck!!

  49. 49 SK

lol, suga!! πŸ™‚ I LOVE the ‘lighter in my hand, set the blasted shirt on fire’ theory!! πŸ˜€

  50. 50 Nida Aqeel

haha…ill rem that for my other painting aswell!!!:P

  51. 51 suganspice

How about a painting on “What goes around..comes around”…

  52. 52 skzworldofdreams

‘They’ won’t get it suga…they’ll prob. think…’hmmm, now what’s this circle thing all about? Someone playing a ball game?’ πŸ˜€ Woah! Switch off, Einstein! πŸ˜›

  53. 53 skzworldofdreams

Yeh larka 100 comments hone ke baad aaega.. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜›

  54. 54 PsycheD

lol πŸ™‚ see nida…u got a lot of ‘visualizers’ suggesting potential masterpieces for u! how about somethng that screams ‘hearbreaker/insensitive/asshole’ – or all 3 in one…as sk predicted about xill waiting for the comments to hit 100 b4 resurfacing…i think u better registed ur own blog, and we’ll follow suit….aenween xill’s blog comment counter is having a field day.

damn it xill! no more 100 comments!

  56. 56 SK

Wow! Look at the bottom of this page, Psyched. The theme Xil has is ‘unsleepable’!! lol!! More like ‘unwakeable’ or ‘un-comeback-able’ in this case! πŸ˜€

  57. 57 SK

oh AB-bas….chalo khidmat-e-khlaq karo…please give us a link to where we can view more of Nida Aqeel’s paintings…kuch to faida ho tumhara?!! πŸ˜€

ur nani is ryte, afterall shes experienced, and omg, i dnt want to sit like this my whole life, looking hopefully if His highness accepts my devotion to him or not, its a gamble, and m afraid.

  59. damn nida, your work has got the masses excited. when i open up an art gallery you’re the first person putting up your work for display.

  60. and shehla, psyched, et al., i’ve been away from blogging because i’m tending to my mother who got seriously injured in an accident upcountry. mashallah, she’s much better now but a few prayers wouldn’t hurt πŸ™‚

so this post wasn’t intended to be an in-excess-of hundred-comments thing but i won’t mind if you take it there. πŸ˜› makes me look popular. unfortunately you’re the only ones watching and i really don’t care what you think i look like. πŸ˜› πŸ˜€

  61. 61 SK

‘unfortunately you’re the only ones watching and i really don’t care what you think i look like’..just when I was about to express my sorrow at what had happened, thinking ‘oh gosh, poor guy, he must be devastated’…THIS! Na Shukre! πŸ˜› Yaay girls…the dude is back…LITERALLY…insults and all! πŸ˜›

On a more serious note..Ab-bas πŸ˜› Hope your mom is feeling better now. Hope it’s not too serious. Will keep praying for her. πŸ™‚ Inshallah she will be well soon. πŸ™‚

Actually will keep praying for her son too…apparently he needs A LOT of prayers! πŸ˜›

  62. 62 SK

Oh and sorry to hear about the accident.

  63. hopefully ur mother will recover soon InshaAllah

  64. 64 Nida Aqeel

yeah Abbas..n its doing good to me too..:))…

  65. i think u look like a baingan. not that you care.

  66. 66 skzworldofdreams

    err…that was for Xil? WOAH!! πŸ˜€ ????

  67. course it was for xille. unless you want to look like a baingan too, in which case all hope shall be lost and the world will go to the dogs.

  68. 68 skzworldofdreams

Nahin thank you, I’ll pass. πŸ˜€ ‘and the world will go to the dogs’…hasn’t it already? Or so the ‘dogs’ would like to believe! πŸ˜› *psst…I think my ‘back side’ is already looking like a tarbooz though! Working on reducing. πŸ˜› *

  69. 69 skzworldofdreams

On a more serious note: Hope Xil’s mom is doing better. Not a good sign that he’s not back here as yet. Hoe she;s better and it’s nothing serious. We’re praying, Xil. πŸ™‚

  70. 70 skzworldofdreams

‘Hope’ she’s better…sooo sorry! That was a typo…REALLY sorry. *Uff! SK is feeling sick with shame* Sorry, Xil. 😦

  71. 71 PsycheD
